Beech Tree

Alternative Views:

The American Beech tree, Fagus grandiflora, can grow larger than 100 feet tall and is usually found growing as a native shade tree in damp or wet soils.  The American Beech trees are very tolerant of growing slowly underneath other trees and are a shade tolerant tree, but once the tree reaches maturity, it is virtually impossible to grow other plants under the established Beech Tree. The identification of the American Beech trees during the winter is simple, because the toothed oval leaves remain on the tree but turn grayish in color.  The small beech nuts that are formed on the trees are edible but too small to market commercially, however, many wildlife animals and game birds flock and gather underneath the trees, once the beech nuts ripen and fall off the trees.
