Canary Island Date Palm Tree
Canary Island Date Palm Tree

The Canary Island Date Palm Tree, Phoenix canariensis, grows into an evergreen, stately specimen that is adapted for growing in zones 8 to 10, where it can withstand winter temperatures as cold as 10 F degrees, but the leaves will be damaged, if the cold days are extended, however, new leaves will normally return in May or June.  The Canary Island Palm tree has a very large single trunk that is slow growing but at maturity enlarges to the enormous size of 130 feet, and many of these gigantic monoliths can be found growing at St Simon Island, Georgia and Sea Island, GA., and  Canary Island Date Palm trees are tolerant of the salt water.
