Chinquapin Oak Tree
Chinquapin Oak Tree

Alternative Views:

The Chinquapin Oak Tree, Quercus muehlenbergii, is also correctly spelled alternately and Latinized as Quercus muhlenbergii in botanical literature,  and  this Oak shade tree prefers to grow in elevated pH soil profiles, that range from 6.5 to above 7, and the green leaves are marked by sharp pointed teeth on the leaf margins on leaves that turn yellow in the fall.  The Chinquapin Oak trees are very cold hardy, and these shade trees grow in native forests from Wisconsin to Florida and westwards to Texas.  The acorns of the Chinquapin Oaks form edible nuts that are agreeable and sweet to the human taste, even in the green state, just like the American Chinquapin nuts, that have a similar taste and size.
