Italian Cypress Trees

Alternative Views:

The Italian Cypress tree, Cupressus sempervirens, is an evergreen tree that can grow over 100 feet tall.  The Italian Cypress trees are very long lived, and some Mediterranean specimens are dated to be over 1000 years old.  The Italian Cypress trees are native to Turkey, the Mideast and North Africa, but surprisingly, not to Italy.  Since ancient times this tree has been planted as an ornamental shade tree that was associated with death and mourning, and that resulted in the tree being called the, 'Cemetery Tree'.  Italian cypress trees are normally found growing in shapes, as elongated cones, the height extending to be 10 times taller than the width, and the leaves are scale-like and very pleasingly fragrant.  The densely green leafed tree sways and moves dramatically in the slightest breeze.
