Overcup Oak Tree

Alternative Views:

The Overcup Oak tree, Quercus lyrata, is an excellent native shade tree, an American tree that grows in selected groupings as an endangered tree from Illinois South to Florida and Westwards to Texas.  The Overcup Oak tree is named, because the acorn cup almost completely covers the view of the acorn that grows within.  As an ornamental shade tree candidate, the Overcup Oaks will tolerate wet soils that can grow up to 60 feet tall.  The acorn nuts are an excellent, sought-after, wildlife animal food plot selection for white tailed deer, turkey and wood duck.  During the fall the leaves turn bright yellow and red.
