Pindo Palm Tree
Pindo Palm Tree

Alternative Views:

The Pindo palm tree, Butia capitata, is a large, tropical looking evergreen palm tree that is cold hardy enough to survive ice and snow and cold temperatures as low as 5 degrees F.  The Pindo palm trees have very long 6 foot leaves, shaped like bird feathers, that arch and re-curve downwards, and the leaves can be colored bright green, or sometimes, the more unusual silver-gray colored specimens.  Pools are conveniently shaded by the huge, clean canopy of leaves.  Salt water tolerance is no problem for this 15 to 20 foot tropical tree that is commonly found planted in the landscapes at Court Houses and government, recreation.parks.  The trunks of the Pindo palms are wide and thick, growing slowly to leave jagged, leaf remnants that remain still attached to the trunks, but after many years (30 or more) these remnant leaves will disintegrate unveiling the beautiful, slick gray trunks that were hidden underneath. When the trunk grows to about 3 feet tall, a large cluster of flowers appears that develop into yellow-orange, kumquat-sized fruits that are agreeably aromatic and sweet enough to eat like palm tree dates straight off the tree or to cook into the famous Pindo jelly.  In Florida the Pindo palms are called 'Jelly Palms' and this item is popularly sold at tourists, roadside markets.

Nice starter. Ordered the 2-3 foot trees and pleased with the size and shape. Shipping and planting went well and quickly. Needed to go back on-line to double check planting instructions. Would be nice to include a short fact sheet on planting tips.

Small with yellowed leaves April 2, 2017

I ordered these for they're supposedly cold tolerant down to 5 degrees. They were delivered in a bundle very small in size and cost over $100. Our local Wal-mart has 2.5 gallon 3' tall palm tree's fully leaved out for $13 each. Probably not Pindo Palms but much nicer specimens for much less.
