Tulip Poplar Tree

Alternative Views:

The Tulip Poplar tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, is the tallest of the hardwood trees that are grown in the Eastern parts of the United States, growing from New York and Illinois to Florida in the South.  The Tulip Poplar trees are important, large shade trees that can grow over 100 feet tall, and the heavy leafy shade comes from the huge, 6 inch leaves with their unusual exotic shape.  During the spring the flowers form that are Tulip-sized and colored greenish-yellow with occasional spots of red with a delightful floral fragrance.  During the fall the leaves turn brilliant yellow.  The lower limbs of the Tulip Poplar tree often fall off early, because of their shade intolerance and are shaded out from the higher placed limbs that are thickly leaved.  The Tulip Poplar trees are very popular shade trees, because the trees are such fast growers.  The roots are thick and fleshy and are best transplanted while dormant in the fall, since the roots tend to grow during 9 months out of the year.
