Alternative Views:

The American elm tree, Ulmus americana, is one of the most hardy shade trees, surviving low winter temperatures down to minus 40 degrees F. , and growing as a native tree from Florida to Canada on a wide variety of soil profiles.  The American elm trees grow taller - up to 100 feet in the Northern States - than in the Southern States, and in the North have survived several hundred years growing as single trees.  The American elm seeds are small and wind dispersed being widely distributed in American native forests.  For planting as a specimen tree and a wildlife tree, the American elm tree is popularly used in parks and recreation centers because of its adaptability advantages as a native tree.
