American Hophornbeam Tree
American Hophornbeam

Alternative Views:

The American Hophornbeam, Ostrya virginiana, tree is also known as the: 'Ironwood Tree', principally because of the extremely hard wood that is commercially grown to make tools such as hammer handles and cross bows that are used in archery.  The American Hophornbeam tree is a native tree to forests from Northern States of Wyoming to Florida, and the extreme cold hardiness makes this shade tree viable to grow up to 50 feet tall during the winter cold temperatures of minus 40 degrees F.  The tree is popular to plant as a street shade tree, and the nut-like seeds attract birds and other wildlife animals to feed when other food is scarce during the fall and winter.
