Ann Japanese Magnolia tree,  Magnolia x Ann, is a hybrid magnolia that was develop by the National Arboretum that is very cold hardy.  The Ann Magnolia tree is a slow grower that can grow up to 8 feet tall, and the flowers appear late in the spring that is about 3 weeks later than the Saucer magnolia flowering tree.  The flowers are reddish-purple in color and slightly fragrant with the important advantage of blooming in late March or April that reduces the possible damage to the flowers by late, unexpected frosts.
