Dwarf Cavendish banana trees are commercially important fruit trees that are sold in the United States, where the bananas have been imported by the boatloads  from South America since the Civil War.  The Cavendish banana plant only grows 6 to 8 feet tall with large tropical leaves, and a fragrant fruit that is commonly seen and marketed in supermarkets throughout the United States.  The Cavendish banana tree is somewhat cold hardy and can be usually grown as far North as zone 7,   if it is given some mulch  protection in the ground during the winter.
