The Chinese Elm tree, Ulmus parvifolia, is a fast growing shade tree that can grow up to 6 feet a year while it is in the juvenile stage and reaches maturity at a height of 40 to 50 feet..  The leaves are small, oval and gracefully arranged on the twigs to present a willow look.  The green leaves turn bright yellow late in the fall and  sometimes remain on the trees as long as late December of early January.  The Chinese Elm trees are very cold hardy and can be grown in almost every State as an excellent shade tree that can produce heavy shade at an early age.  The wood of the Chinese Chestnut tree is very hard and is in high demand for the manufacture of furniture and tool handles.
