The European Fan Palm tree, Chamaerops humilis, is a native palm tree in Southern Europe and can be found growing along the beaches of Southern Spain, Southern France and South of Naples Italy where it grows in huge clumps and dense thickets along the sand dunes and suppresses beach erosion with its deep growing roots.  The European Fan Palm tree has also been known as the, 'Mediterranean Fan Palm Tree'.  This dwarf palm tree reproduces into large clumps with multiple offset stems that grow from the mother palm tree in the center and can grow up to 15 feet tall that forms an impenetrable thick mass.  The leaves of the European Palm trees are dark green in color and are armed with thorns or with spikes , or the the leaves of this palm tree rarely are offered for sale with a muted silver leaf color.  The European palm trees are more cold hardy in Southern Georgia than either the Phoenix genus palm trees or the Chinese Fan Palm, and showed no apparent leaf damage in the very cold winter of 2014.
