Live Oak Tree

Alternative Views:

The Live Oak shade tree, Quercus virginiana, has been long connected with the Old South that was pictured romantically  in the book and movie, “Gone With The Wind” where long driveways were outlined with double rows of these evergreen Live Oak shade trees.  The Live Oak tree is tap rooted deep into the sand and clay as a well anchored specimen that resists a hurricane's high winds.  The natural growing area of the Live Oak trees is from Virginia to Florida and West to Texas, but these shade trees have also been successfully growing further North in zone 6,  in Connecticut and Ohio for many years, where the leaves may shed in severe winters, and they are also very salt water tolerant.  The acorns of the Live Oak trees are small nuts and a valuable source of wildlife food for quail, turkey and wood ducks among many other wildlife animals.  The Live Oak is a convenient host for other plants that grow on the limbs and add further shading, such growing companions as the mistletoe, Spanish Moss and the resurrection ferns.  The Live Oak Tree is the State Tree of the State of Georgia.
