The Loblolly Pine tree, Pinus taeda, is the second most abundant forest tree that grows in the US., behind the Red Maple tree as the most abundant tree.  The Loblolly Pine trees are also known as the, 'Southern Yellow Pine Tree',  and  are found growing from New Jersey southwards to Florida and then westwards to Texas.  The Loblolly Pine trees are the most important lumber tree in the United States.  This fast growing tree can grow up to 120 feet tall with a diameter of 4 feet.  The leaves grow in bundles of three and remain attached on the tree for two years when they shed off during the fall and winter that are often sold as pine straw.  This evergreen tree produces a valuable resin within all growing parts that keeps it immune from disease problems, and until the end of WWII the resin was collected and sold as 'Naval Stores' that was distilled into turpentine that was a valuable paint thinner.  The Loblolly Pine trees have been hybridized with the Longleaf Pine tree to form a very fast growing tree, called,'Sonderegger Pine tree'.
