Needle Palm Tree
Needle Palm Tree

Alternative Views:

The Needle palm tree, Rapidophyllum hysterix,  is the most cold hardy evergreen palm tree that is a native tree in the Southern United States, surviving winter cold temperatures as low as minus, 20 degrees F.  Because of its extreme cold hardiness, the Needle palm trees have been extensively marketed throughout the country, and that has critically limited their numbers that grow in their natural state, causing them to become rare and endangered in their wild habitat.  The popularity of the Needle palm trees, as a fan palm tree, does not seem to have been impacted because of the prickly  presence of 4 inch long gray needles, that protrude from the base of the leaf petioles.  Animals avoid the needle palms wherever they are found growing.  The biggest surprise about needle palms' sharply pointed armor is, that they have become a prominent landscape pool plant, even at some Atlantic 5-star Hotel resorts, but children seem to know intuitively to keep their distance from the threat of their needles that protrude from the trunk.  These choice palm trees grow slowly to form gigantic impenetrable clumps, and the central mother tree can grow to 6 feet in height..  Needle palms are beautiful with a dramatic tropical flair where they have been popularly growing from New York to Michigan and Texas.
