Orient Pear Tree
Orient Pear Tree

Alternative Views:

The Orient pear tree, Pyrus communis x Pyrus pyrifolia 'Orient'  This huge round pear is hard when ripe and is a hybrid with the shape of an Asian pear.  The gritty cells within remind the taster of the Kieffer pear, but the pear shape is entirely different.  The trees grow into very large specimens, and the pears taste crispy and firm, but lack the smoothness or soft texture of other hybrids.  These Orient pears are not recommended for eating fresh, but are excellent to grow for cooking or to attract wildlife animals like Canadian Geese, Deer and Turkey.
