Pond Cypress Tree

Alternative Views:

The Pond Cypress tree, Cupressus ascendens, sheds its leaves during the fall after turning into a bright orange color and usually is found growing as a native American shade tree in very wet areas like still ponds and waterlogged, backwater, swamps.  The Pond Cypress trees send out roots that frequently rise out of the water, sometimes rising several feet in height and are a popular electric-light-lamp-base, souvenir that is sold in the South at tourists stops.  The Pond Cypress trees grow into enormous trees in the natural state, one being dated over 3400 years old, and the dark fern-like leaves are fragrant.  The wood of the Pond Cypress tree is valuable to use as fence posts, and the larger trees are commercially sawed at the lumberyard into beams or planks that are rot resistant.
