River Birch Tree

Alternative Views:

The River Birch shade trees, Betula nigra, can grow either into a single trunk that may grow to 90 feet in height,  or  this leafy shade tree may have multiple trunks with a peeling bark that has a great ornamental value to reveal the white, smooth bark underneath.  The River Birch trees are native shade trees to the United States and are cold hardy enough to grow in most of the US., and in the native American forests are found growing in very wet areas that seems to be the most desirable soil preference for growing River Birch trees.  The sap of the River Birch is sweet like the sap of the Sugar Maple, and the wood was boiled by the American Indians to use as a food sweetener.  The paper-thin, peeling bark of the River Birch tree is crackly like parchment and lasts only one year before the smooth white bark matures to peel off the following year.  The small toothed green leaves produce a dense shade in the fall that is changed into a leafy yellow glow after the first frost.

The trees look healthy so far and was packaged well. They were both already budding out and ready to go so I planted them immediately. Only time will tell now :)
