Scarlet Locust Tree

Alternative Views:

The Scarlet Locust flowering tree in late spring is covered with brilliant scarlet red flower clusters that hang from the branches like loose clusters of red grapes.  The thin delicate leaves are fern-like, and the tree is classified as a legume, which means that the root network system fixes Nitrogen in the soil to enrich without the need for extra fertilization or any addition of nutrients.  The major flowering event of the red locust flowering tree can last for a couple of weeks, and then recurrent blooming repeats the formation of red flowers throughout the summer.  This unusual and rare flowering tree thrives best in a wet soil environment, growing and blooming where most other plants will not flourish.

The leaves of the Scarlet Locust tree are amazingly similar to those of the Mimosa Tree. Like other Locust trees, it develops long seedpods which can hang on the tree for several months after maturing. Birds use these Scarlet locust seeds for food late in the winter and spread them in droppings. The small Flowering Scarlet Locust Tree has drooping branches and produces fern-like leaflets, that are sensitive to various environmental factors such as touch, light and rain and will close up with surprisingly little stimulation.
