Shellbark Hickory Tree

Alternative Views:

Shellbark Hickory tree, Carya laciniosa, grows into a large tree, and when mature around 10 years old will produce large crops of very large nuts with hard shells that contain sweet tasting kernels with a delicious flavor.  The shellbark hickory trees grow best in neutral to basic soils that are rich and very moist-like swampy soils.  The hickory tree wood is very hard and can be used in making furniture and tool handles, or the wood is useful in smoking meat to achieve that smoked hickory flavor.  The long taproot makes these larger trees difficult to transplant successfully.  The shellbark hickory tree can easily hybridize with the pecan tree to produce the Hican tree nuts.

I just received the trees. They looked very healthy. Haven't had a chance to plant them yet but do not foresee any problems.
