Swamp White Oak Tree

Alternative Views:

The Swamp White Oak tree, Quercus bicolor, is a popular Oak for transplanting and was recently planted on a large scale at the site in New York City to memorialize the destruction of the former World Trade Center.  The Swamp White Oak shade trees are among the most cold hardy Oaks, surviving low winter cold temperatures of minus 30 degrees F.  These popular shade trees grow as native trees from Maine southwards to Kentucky, growing up to 80 feet tall.  The Swamp White Oaks form leaves that turn a vivid and vibrant bronze-red during the fall.  The abundant acorns are fully matured after developing on the trees for only 6 months, and that characteristic makes them an excellent selection for planting as wildlife trees in Northern States to establish as a permanent wildlife food plot provider for heavy acorn crops.
