Sylvester Date Palm Tree
Sylvester Palm Tree

Alternative Views:

The Sylvester Palm tree, Phoenix sylvestris,  is native palm tree to Pakistan but has been naturalized in the Southern United States, where wild trees are collected and sold to landscapers as specimen trees.  The Sylvester palm looks very similar to the Canary Island Date palm tree, except that the leaves are blue-green and are sleeker.  The trunks of the Sylvester palm trees are unlike other palms, when the leaf remnants are removed, having a half-bubbled look, that makes it a very desirable palm tree to grow near swimming pools, since it is a clean performer, leaving no leafy trash to fall into the water.  The cold hardiness of the Sylvester palms is slightly less than the Canary Island palm and is only recommended for permanent growing in zones 9 and 10.
