Sawtooth Oak Tree

Alternative Views:

The Sawtooth Oak tree, Quercus acutissima, is a native tree import from the Orient that has been brought into the United States, because of its early production of acorns, and the entire production of acorns from a single shade tree is greater than any other Oak shade tree.  Sawtooth Oak trees have been naturalized in many locations and are cold hardy enough to grow in almost every State.  These Sawtooth Oak trees are faster growing than any other Oak tree and can bear acorns in as little as 5 years, if a 6 foot tree is transplanted.  Sawtooth Oaks are also one of the easiest trees to transplant when dormant, showing practically no transplant shock observed, even for large specimens.  Wildlife game preserves plant many of these acorn producers to grow as a permanent food source that are designated perennial plots.  The Sawtooth Oak tree is an excellent street tree and urban shade tree that is often planted to adjoin roadways, since the showy leaves are brightly colored yellow and bronze in the fall, being impervious to automobile car fumes.
